How a travel eSIM works
A travel eSIM adds a second mobile plan to your device. Most travel plans provide mobile data rather than a new phone number, so you can keep your regular SIM active for calls, text messages, and verification codes while directing internet traffic through the travel eSIM.
After purchase, install the profile while you have reliable Wi-Fi. Activation rules vary: some plans begin when installed, while others begin only when the eSIM first connects to a supported network at the destination. Always read the individual plan details before installation.
What you need before buying
Your device must support eSIM and be carrier-unlocked. A phone can support eSIM technically but still reject another provider if it is locked to the carrier that sold it.

eSIM benefits and limitations
The main benefits are advance setup, no physical SIM to lose, and the ability to retain your usual number. Limitations depend on the plan: hotspot access, 5G, top-ups, voice calls, and network coverage are not identical across every destination.
Do not delete an installed profile unless the provider confirms it can be downloaded again. Many eSIM profiles are issued for one installation on one device.
