Light, regular, and heavy use
A light traveller using maps, messages, email, and occasional web searches may use around 300–500 MB per day. Regular social media, frequent photo uploads, and music can move usage toward 1 GB per day. Streaming video or tethering a laptop can require multiple gigabytes per day.
- Light use: roughly 300–500 MB/day
- Regular use: roughly 500 MB–1 GB/day
- Heavy video or hotspot use: 2 GB/day or more
Reduce unexpected usage
Download offline maps, playlists, translation languages, and entertainment over Wi-Fi. Disable automatic photo backup and app updates on mobile data. Video quality is one of the largest variables, so lower streaming resolution when conserving data.
Choose with a safety margin
Multiply your expected daily use by the number of travel days, then add a modest buffer for delays or itinerary changes. Confirm whether the plan can be topped up; if it cannot, a slightly larger allowance may be more practical than installing another eSIM mid-trip.
