Using mobile data in Iraq

Buy the Iraq eSIM before you fly and it connects to Asiacell when you land, with no shop visit and no plastic SIM card. It is data only, with no Iraqi number, and the five sizes run from 1 GB for 7 days to 20 GB for 30 days.

Coverage during your trip

The plan lists Iraq as its coverage area and one local network, Asiacell, on 4G, with no city list. One network means there is no second carrier to fall back on where it is weak, so save offline maps for each city and route before you leave the last town. Reporting on local SIMs describes 4G in Baghdad, Basra and Najaf as workable for maps, messages and video calls, with gaps on the long southern highways, west of the Euphrates, around Rawanduz and Barzan and in the marshes. That reporting covers local networks rather than this plan, and the network it describes as strongest inside the Kurdistan Region is Korek, which this plan is not on. Treat it as context, not a coverage guarantee from flowsus.

Choosing and preparing your plan

Pick by length of stay: 1 GB for 7 days, then 3, 5, 10 or 20 GB for 30 days, with the per-gigabyte price falling to $2.07 at 20 GB. Validity starts on the first connection and a plan can be activated within 180 days of purchase, so buying early costs nothing. Sort the paperwork in the same sitting: Iraq has no visa on arrival, the e-visa costs $160 and has to be applied for at least 24 hours before travel, so keep the approval offline with your booking. If the Kurdistan Region is most of your trip, ask support before you buy: the page names the country and the network, not the cities.

Iraq eSIM questions

Do I get an Iraqi phone number with the plan?

No, and that is the thing to check before you buy: the Iraq plans are data only, so there is no Iraqi number and no calls or SMS from the eSIM. Your usual number stays on your own SIM, and that is the number to give a driver or a guesthouse. Messages and calls inside apps run over the data plan, while verification codes from a bank or an airline still arrive on your own SIM, so keep it active with data roaming off.

Can I add data for a second week?

Top-up is listed as available on the plan page. The 10 GB and 20 GB plans already run 30 days, so the question is usually gigabytes rather than days; only the 1 GB plan is limited to 7 days. There is no unlimited option here, so heavy video or a laptop on hotspot has to be sized from the largest plan. The page does not say how a top-up affects the 30-day window, so ask support if the end date matters.

Nothing connects after landing. What do I check?

First the line: the eSIM has to be set for mobile data, data roaming on for that eSIM only, airplane mode off. Restart, then open a page in the browser. If it still fails, follow the APN instructions supplied with the plan. The plan lists one network, Asiacell, so there is no second carrier to switch to; if the phone finds no network at all, check whether a national shutdown is being reported, because no eSIM gets around one.

My trip is mostly Erbil and Sulaymaniyah. Is that covered?

Not confirmed. The plan page names Iraq and one network, Asiacell, and no cities, so ask support before you buy if the Kurdistan Region is the whole trip. What is confirmed: the plan covers Iraq only, so it is not a regional plan for the countries around it, and it is data only, so it carries no Iraqi number.
